Hello all,In my two city metropolation area, I receive about fifty TV channels with my outdoor Channel Master 4228 outdoor antenna.I live about 20 miles away from the TV stations.I am a serious professional TV antenna hobbist for the last five years.I go overboard at times with my TV antenna hobby.Maybe I should get a life.I recently purchased a(Non-Amplified) "MOHU LeafIndoor HDTV Antenna" at a yard sale for about$ 10.00.(No connection to that company)I took it home, hooked it up to the BASEMENT TV.Thats right. I did say theBASEMENT TV.I figured that I wouldrecieve maybe five TV channels.I was astonished, when I recieved about fifteen TV channels.1. Doesthis antenna really have that great of a design hidden inside it's flexible plastic cover?2. Does anybody know what the inside of it might look like?Thank you, mike

"1. Doesthis antenna really have that great of a design hidden inside it's flexible plastic cover?2. Does anybody know what the inside of it might look like? "I think an answer might be had if you were to put an ordinary bowtie between two pieces of cardboard and hook it to the basement TV.. Fix the thing to a paper box or something, so it sits up, and use it as you would the Leaf.I think you'll find some answers..

build a double biquad with 12.1cm sides, feed in center with a 300-75ohm balun. test that against your antenna. or a gray hoverman variant.

20 miles means squat if you have a 2 edge report, or great if los line of sight. You would have needed a tvfool.com graph report we could help you.www.tvfool.com/?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=29&q=id%3de1c6ae9ffc1096

I forgot to mention, Menards or other hardware store sells #6 solid copper wire wire 4ft for $2, and the balun for $1.50. you can make a 12.1cm sided double bi-quad for UHF tv usage. Thrift stores usually has 6ft coax for $0.25 , 2 screws, nuts, 4 washers to hold balun.

To straighten wire, use vice on one end, drill on the other, as the drill turns, the wire will will unbend itself. easiest way. run emery cloth along wire to shine, then bend. Google double bi-quad for bending pattern. After bend clear paint will prevent oxidizing and keep the shine

I used pvc as backing as this was made for mobile use so I can literally throw it in my truck.

I forgot to mention,

Menards or other hardware store sells #6 solid copper wire

wire 4ft for $2, and the balun for $1.50. you can make a

12.1cm sided double bi-quad for UHF tv usage. Thrift stores

usually has 6ft coax for $0.25 , 2 screws, nuts, 4 washers

to hold balun.

To

straighten wire, use vice on one end, drill on the other, as

the drill turns, the wire will will unbend itself. easiest

way. run emery cloth along wire to shine, then bend. Google

double bi-quad for bending pattern. After bend clear paint

will prevent oxidizing and keep the shine

Hello

all,In my two city metropolation

area, I receive about fifty TV channels with my outdoor

Channel Master 4228 outdoor antenna.I live about

20 miles away from the TV stations.I

am a serious professional TV antenna hobbist for the last

five years.I go overboard at times with my TV

antenna hobby.Maybe I should get a

life.I recently purchased

a(Non-Amplified) "MOHU LeafIndoor HDTV

Antenna" at a yard sale for about $

10.00.(No connection to that company)I

took it home, hooked it up to the BASEMENT TV.

Thats right. I did say theBASEMENT

TV.I figured that I would

recieve maybe five TV channels. I was

astonished, when I recieved about fifteen TV

channels.1. Doesthis antenna

really have that great of a design hidden inside it's

flexible plastic cover?2. Does anybody know what

the inside of it might look

like?Thank you,

You seea large interest in homemade antennas, because the internet gives you robust antenna calculators for yagi, dipole, j-pole, you can pay someone else to build it for you, though I find some times I can do it my self, cheaper. eating at home instead of eating out for example.

I needed a durable, portable to go tv antenna. It did not exist, so I built one. I may try using 1/2 copper pipe, and emery cloth then clear coat, make it look better.

"I needed a durable, portable to go tv antenna. It did not exist, so I built one."That, I think, is the reason for making an antenna.

#789 Jun 22, 2014

Thanks, that's what I was wondering. What your building isnt even available so u have to make it. There's not much out there for portable antennas that are worth much.

At first I was thinking that some were either too frugial to pay $50-70 for an outdoor one or a homemade one may pick up many more stations. I had to hunt around for an outdoor antenna a few yrs ago and a local electronics store sold me a discontinued model (they no longersell outdoor antennas) Once I own a home, I'll probably build an extension of what I already have so I can get more stations. Neighboring markets have stations I wish I could get. For now, I'm in an apt w/ cable (they pay for it) so my antenna's put away for now.

You pay on one way or another for an antenna. one way is to let someone else do the work for you, and the other is the labor in creating it yourself. It depends on your skill set is. With the internet, one can create acommercial gradeantenna with littleexperiencenow.

Purchasing a LNA low noise amplifier vs a traditional amplifier can make or break digital signals, so if you need to place money into an antenna, a mast mount pre-amp low noise amplifier LNA, If no noise in dbi is listed in the specs, there is a reason it was left out, older amp with high noise, or noise was too high and excluded to prevent loss of sales. If your going to buy $50+ for an antenna, make sure you get what you pay for.

Price is no judge on an antenna, You will have to compare 2 different antennasubjectively, use an antennaanalyzer, or use antenna modeling software.

If there is an amplifierinvolved, it needs to be after the antennas balun, and verify 0.8dbi to 2.0dbi of noise from the amp. lower the better. Quad shield rg-6 for 25ft or longer coax.

If you want to spend money, lmr 400, lmr 600 or lmr 1200 coax for 50 feet or more, this is moreexpensivecable, but designed better for uhf over longer distances. Digital requires more signal than analog, If you plan on spending $150 on an antenna, spending $20 for 25 foot of quad rg6 may dew, but $75 for lmr 600 will giveconsiderableless loss at uhf frequencies.

If you can build one for $5-$15 worth of material, instead of spending $50-70, and its within your skill set to build, I would take some effort and try myself. Its not being frugal with money, but there are other items beyond my skill set that the money can be better spent, I call that wise allocation of resources. I would say frugal would be counting each square of toilet paper before use.

I definitely meant frugal in a good way. For me, the time it would take wouldnt be worth it unless it was a setup I couldnt buy. I had also wondered about the mileage range of the homemade antennas vs similar ones in the store. The DTV antennas they sell for $150 (like at Best Buy) look like chicken wire and 4 loop UHF antennas which would probably be less than $10 of materials and a few hours to build unless I'm missing something. Either way I respect someone who can craft something like that homemade and make it work.

BillSilly Windows, computing is for Macs!

#795 Jun 23, 2014

There is no real magic in a non amplified antenna, and chicken wire or any crossed wire about a half inch size metal used as a reflector and to allow wind to pass through will work fine. the bloated distance they boast is anestimateat best. use tvfool.com report to gage yourpossibledistance from theheightof your antenna will be a bettergaugeat how far your antenna willreceive. UHF is lineof sight (los) for the most part, the higher you go, the further you will view. You can see this on tvfool.com using antennaheightfrom 0-500ft.antennaheight or the antennas drecectivity gain, get distance. As Gain goes up you are focusing on longer distances, and the stations on the sides, or behind will be sacrificed. So you really need to start with tvfools.com and see where the stations are in relation to you before choosing styles of antenna. if you need some advice, post your tvfool.com link for antenna advise.

Antennas are definitely an odd case, as the material is cheap, but the knowledge of the optimum design is complex physics and not something you would ever solve by noodling about with trial and error. Given that the designs are freely available, there is little to stop us from building one. It may be necessary to hold dimensions precisely accurate, or else get a lower performance result. I would think the profit margin for manufacturing antennas is extreme.Jaymz

The "inside the unit picture" reminded me of the one I am currently

using in the living-room, it was Sort of RCA branded.(says RCA on the

unit but not the box and I suspect it was a refurbished return

I got it at Princess Auto.

Retail cost to material cost ratio on antennas is probably like bottled water. Very low cost on material with much of the cost in handling.BillSilly Windows, computing is for Macs!

Looks much like a dipole within a dipole different length, no amp, specificationsdeliberately do not give itsdirectivity in dbi (shocking). maybe 1.5dbi?
