I had the same weird request for internet access and tracked it down to the
fact that I had not installed the separate Windows installer software. This
is the file INSTMSIW.EXE that's available at the same site where you
download MaxIm 3.06. I ran that (only takes a couple of seconds) and then
the MaxIm upgrade (I already had v3.02 on the machine) ran without asking
for access to the net. It's the only software that ever asked me for a
separate installer and the fact that it doesn't come out and say "I need
INSTMSIW.EXE to run this install" is not user-friendly. I think it's
explained on the Cyanogen site, but it still seems unnecessarily
complicated. BTW, 3.06 runs fine on my Win2000 system.

The message in question comes from InstallShield; I agree that it is not the
most helpful, but unfortunately we didn't write it.
