Hello Neil,

If you haven't downloaded the latest ASCOM driver, get it here:

ascom-standards.org/downloads.html

You may also want to get the latest version of FocusMax:

users.bsdwebsolutions.com/~larryweber/

For my observatory setup, I use TheSky with MaximDL. Under Telescope Control in Maxim, I have it set for "TheSky-controlled telescope", with the Server Settings in TheSky set for "Allow Remote connections".

FocusMax SYSTEM settings are set for the "Finger Lakes Focuser". The Setup is configured for "No movement, restore last position value", with the Backlash set for 15.

If you use the Wizard function in FocusMax, it will assign the correct values for the start position, and V-Curve settings. When you run a V-Curve, check the System Profile PI Diff value. I usually rn 3 or 4 V-Curves. If the PI Diff values are all similiar, I will leave them, otherwise, I will delete the highest ones and leave the lowest value.

When the Wizard initially runs, things look really stange as FocusMax goes through its motions. Most likely, the V-Curve will be offset. However, once it finishes, you should be able to see how it updated the V-Curve settings with a new Center value and step value, and Half Width value. At this point, you should be able to perform a focus, which should yeild the lowest FWHM. I usually select a mag 5-6 star centered in the FOV with the Red filter.

Hope this helps. I know that FocusMax can be frustrating.

Thanks for the tips, Mike.

So, how are you set up and "connecting"? Do you connect ASCOM/POTH to the

telecsope AND focuser? And then connect TheSky6 and MaxIM to

ASCOM-controlled scope and focuser?

Yep. Tis working OK.

That is what I was trying to do with the initialization settings.

Can you tell me a little more about what parameters are set by this process?

A lot of this is still "black box" to me.

I like mine so far. Until I get this straight, however, I find this part of

the workflow taking much longer than it should.

Thanks again...Neil

Many thanks for the cogent explanation, Michael!

Just one question... When you say, "For my observatory setup, I use TheSky

with MaximDL. Under Telescope Control in Maxim, I have it set for

"TheSky-controlled telescope", with the Server Settings in TheSky set for

"Allow Remote connections", you have TheSky on a computer separate from

MaxIM?

Thanks...Neil

Hi Neil,

I have a dedicated observatory computer that resides in the outside dome. All applications and camera/dome control is done from that computer. I access the observatory computer via CAT-5 using Remote Desktop from my office computer.
