Hi all,

I've just put up a new version of my SkyFlats assistant plugin for MaximDL, a tool which is designed to simplify the task of taking good sky flats.

The new version (v2.1) is available for free download from my web site as usual:

winfij.homeip.net/maximdl/skyflats.html

The new version has the following changes:

- Add browse box for save path.

- Save each run into a timestamped directory.

- Add min and max exposure time limits.

- Use subframe to quickly find start exposure time.

- Validate file save path.

Hopefully you'll find these enhancements useful.

If you give it a go, drop me an email to the address on the download page to let me know if you like it.

Regards,

John

Hi John,

Sounds like a great tool, will certainly give it a try.

Can I suggest something for a future update?

Those of us who rotate our cameras use seperate sets of flats for east and west of the pier (in fact for different rotation angles). So it would be great to record this in the header, the naming convention and file path.

This will make it easier to find and stack them seperately.

Unfortunately, Maxim does not recognise the pier position when setting calibration, so having them in the seperate folders will make life easier.

The guys at Maxim have promised to include this feature (to group east/west seperately as for filters) in a future update, but it has not happened yet.

Hi all,

I've just put a new version of my skyflats plugin up on my website.

The plugin can now be operated in one of two modes - manual or scripted.

In manual mode, you specify the camera binning levels to use and the number of flats you require, which are then taken using whichever filter (if any) is currently in place.

The new multi-pass scripted mode allows you to capture a full set of flats using different filters and binning levels in one go - the configuration is entered into a simple text file which the plugin then processes automatically in the appropriate order.

A number of people have asked me for this, so I thought it a useful way to spend a slow Sunday afternoon :)

The plugin is available for free download from my website as normal, the details page and download link are at:

winfij.homeip.net/maximdl/skyflats.html

If you try it and like it (or hate it!), please do drop me a line - I'm always interested to know how people get on with the tools I create.

My email address is on the download page.

Cheers,

John

John,

Thanks very much for yet another release of this great program. The scripting feature will be very useful. I just started using a Flip Flat and SkyFlats takes a long time determining suitable exposures with NB filters. Is there any way to add a (previously determined) exposure time to your script entry line? eg. My Ha filter eventually settled on 224 secs as an exposure but it took about 15 min to get there. It then had to try again for the Oiii and Sii filters, each having a much different time.

Best regards

Charles

John or Charles or ? :

I downloaded the plugin, put it into the MaximDL directory and installed

it by clicking plugin -> add remove plugin -> add plugin

"Sky Flats Assistant" shows in the plugin menu but it is greyed out.

I'm running windows 7 Pro 32 bit.

I'm not very experienced with plugins.

Any ideas what might be wrong ?

John, after installing the new plugin, if I open it and then close it I get a message when I try to close Maxim that another application is using Maxim. I did not get this message with the original plugin.

John, it turns out that I have to close the open image before I can close Maxim without getting this message.

I think the new version is a theoretical improvement (I haven't tried it yet) but I would have really appreciated some sort of GUI to enter in the data, rather than having to produce a text file. One typo and everything fails.

If you try it and like it (or hate it!), please do drop me a line - I'm always interested to know how people get on with the tools I create.

My email address is on the download page.

Hi all,

I've released a new version of my SkyFlats Assistant app (v4.0) onto my website.

The last real update for this was over 3 years ago, but I'm hoping to find more time now to pick back up working on my astro apps.

This app for use with MaximDL allows the user to take a series of sky flats while automatically compensating for the changing sky brightness. It is also useful for users with light boxes since the exposure duration will need to be adjusted for different filters.

----------------------------

#54961 Oct 29, 2013

Hello John

I posted on your own forum but no reply.

I discovered too late that your current (before this release) version

overwrites previous files (which I wanted to keep) so I was asking

whether a 'new' run could simply increment the file number when previous

files are detected.

My work-around has been to stop the process, move the first set to a new

folder, and start again.

TIA

Hi Lawrence,

I actually did reply to your previous message on my yahoo group, but you'll be pleased to know the new version of the app will create a unique timestamped directory for each run, even if you do several runs on the same filter without restarting the app.

Hi John

Yes, sorry for my mistake. I didn't get an update from Yahoo whenyou posted. Yahoo has gone bananas with their new degrading of thesystem. I can no longer reply or change subs or anything becausenone of the options work any more.

Thanks for the mods. One query - I haven't yet tried it but can weinsert a delay between each flat? I discovered that my SX camerawarms up during downloads because Maxim (understandably) doesn't doany other operations during downloads - including cooling thecamera. Hence I want to insert a few seconds delay between flats. Ihave found that during a run of 15 flats the temp warms from -20C tonearly ambient!

TIA
