Ran into odd behavior with DSI beta driver-

Dec 12, 2004

#15198 Dec 12, 2004

I just released the Beta one of the Maxim/DL driver for the Meade DSI. There

are a few open slots on the beta still. If you have Maxim/DL and want to use

the DSI as a guider for another camera in Maxim/DL, or as a primary imager,

and would like to participate in the beta, then please send me e-mail off

the list.

Thanks

Tonight I tried to use the Beta for the DSI in MaximDL. The camera

connected just fine and I was able to make a couple of images. I

tried, however, to use the SXV guider with the DSI as the main camera

and the guide camera would not work. It only works with an SX type

camera when you use the SXV USB 2.0 adapter with the Mx716 camera.

This really limits the use of the DSI with MaximDL for me. I was

able to connect with the DSI as the main camera and the SXV Universal

for the SXV guider. However, when I tried to set up the guider it

would not capture an image, which would be a guide star in this case,

so I could not guide. The SXV guider works fine when the Mx716 is

the main camera.

Is there something I am missing here? I set the main camera as the

DSI Beta and the guide camera as the SXV Universal. When I connected

it looked like everything was working fine. When I did an exposure

in the guide menu I only got a dark screen. There should have been a

star in it but it did not show up. I know it should have been there

because I could see it in the SXV USB software.

I was able to use the DSI Beta Driver in MaximDL with no apparent

problems. I used it as the main camera and I used the SXV USB 2.0

Adapter and the SXV guider as the guide camera. The conditions were

not that good but I was able to make several images with fair

autoguiding with this system. I am going to look over the images and

see if anything is worth posting, but I doubt it. If I find anything

worth reporting I will put them in my photo album "Jim Smith"/

My equipment includes the 8" LX200GPS, the Orion ST80 As guide scope

using a 2x barlow, the Meade DSI camera with it's focal reducer that

I got from OPT. And, of course, the SXV USB 2.0 Adapter with the SXV

guider.

During the tests the power to my laptop became disengaged and I

started having all kinds of problems with the program locking up.

Each time it happened I had to reboot the computer to get the camera

to reconnect, until I found that all you have to do is unplug the

USB cables from the computer and hook them up again. Not until the

computer went into hibernation did I realise that the power cord was

unhooked. After I plugged it back in it was smooth sailing

The one thing I did notice is the Amp Glow with the DSI camera. I

tried to use darks to eliminate it and was only partially

successful. I plan to make several more darks and flats at different

exposure times to set up the calibration better.

I also have the D70 beta driver and will tackle it next.

I have enjoyed three straight nights with clear skies and fairly

moderate temperatures, which is rare in February here in Central

Kentucky

I just uploaded a new version of the DSI beta for MaxIm DL/CCD V4.53 (only):

www.cyanogen.com/temp/DSI2beta.zip

Unzip the files and copy them to the program folder.

If there is a CCDPlugDSI2.dll file in the folder, please delete it.

Double-click the install.bat file.

Start MaxIm DL and try it. It will connect to both the old and new DSI models,

and can handle two cameras simultaneously.

This update adds temperature monitoring for DSI II models, as well as

removed any blocking of the UI while exposures are in progress that may have

happened on some machines in the original beta.

If you download any of the original beta drops, please update to this latest

release.

Does this new plugin also work with the DSI Pro II (monochrome)

Hi Jonathan,

Is there any difference between the production and beta driver besides

DSI v2 support and the ability to connect 2 DSIs?

I have a single DSI Pro v1 and want to know whether it's worth upgrading.

John

The final version will have live gain/offset and camera names, but for now

if it is working fine for you no reason to switch yet.

Jonathan,

I'm still having issues AFTER aborting or stopping a sequence of

images. If I stop a sequence, or if the schedules sequence ends and

I subsequently define a new sequence, this new sequence does

not "work". Upon STARTing the new sequence, the progress bar

rapidly fills, I get the message "downloading image", and the

imaging ends (even thought the software appears to stil be active).

I have to EXIT the software - sometimes twice - and restart to get

this sequence to execute properly.

What is the date on the CCDPlugDSI.dll? It should be 5/14/2006 or newer.

If you have one date 5/6/2006 this is obsolete and has serious threading

issues. The 5/14 version should be very stable.

We have a new beta version for the DSI driver:

www.cyanogen.com/temp/DSIFinalBeta.zip

Unzip the files into the program folder, then double-click the dsiregistry.reg

file.

Please let us know ASAP if you have any problems.

Thanks Doug,

I noticed that the dll's no longer has the "2" suffix so it will

replace the original dsi driver, ok to delete the versions with

the "2" suffix?

Thanks,

Alan

Yes, if you have the CCDPlugDSI2.dll file, please delete it. Otherwise you'll

be seeing double, and one of the copies will be obsolete!

After installing the latest (Final) DSI beta driver I was surprised

to come across the following problem, which I thought had been fixed

in earlier beta versions:

The message window (Setup or Expose tabs)reports:

Main DSI/All

Error

Setpoint -20.0 Temp 27.0 (for example)

When the Disconnect button is clicked the window reports:

WARNING: Cooler ON

I thought earlier beta versions recognised that the DSI doesn't use a

cooler and so didn't give irrelevant messages.

I have the same problem on both my observatory PC and my laptop, both

upgraded to Maxim 4.53, both with WinXP.

The new DSI 2 does expose a temperature sensor. The driver beta used a new

flag that required an update to the Main Maxim_dl.exe file in order for

Maxim to make sense of it (the flag is for read-only temperature without

cooling control).

This will be the same for new DSLR's that have temperature sensors as well.

When the release version comes out it will have all the correct files so the

error won't show up.

It the error bugs you too much, Doug might be able to give you and update to

the exe that will read the DSI 2 temperature and note report an error on the

DSI 1

Before you click on the .reg file, edit it in notepad to make sure the

installation path matches yours.

The path in the zip files points to D:\Program.. Rather than C:\Program..

That most people have.

Sorry for the extra work, this will eventually be built into the installer

when it released.

The beta adds live gain and offset control.

Last night was the first chance I've really had to exercise the latest beta,

and I had the following odd behavior using my original DSI Color:

First I ran a sequence of about 300 images of Jupiter with an exposure time

of .04 seconds. No problems noted.

From there I switched to trying to take some 30 second images of M57. On

the focus tab, I raised the exposure time to 30 seconds and then tried to

take an exposure.

What would happen is that the camera would expose for about 4 seconds, and

then immediately jump to "downloading image from camera" and hang. In order

to get control back, I had to close Maxim. I unplugged/replugged the camera

and tried again. Same thing. This went on four or five tries. I thought I

was complete screwed at that point. In the end, I opened Envisage, took a

few 30 second images, closed it again, then went back to Maxim. Then it

worked fine and I was able to shoot exposures up to 90 seconds with no

further problems. Has anybody else seen anything like this? I did register

the beta to the proper directory per your instructions by editing the .reg

file, and I am using the latest DSI drivers from Meade - I did ultimately

get some really nice results, but this problem had me a bit stymied for a

while.

Regards to all,

Andy
