Re: QUESTION DURING AUTOGUIDING

Hello:

I was doing some AutoGuiding [AG] test last night. I had my ST237A

setup and was using it as the AG.

On my main scope I had an ST8XME. During the guiding I would check in on

the Guide tab and watch the errors as they would come in.

So after I while I disconnected my ST237A and then used the internal

chip for autoguiding. I was AG'ing and all looked okay.

So I went in to check the errors coing in from the AG. The numbers were

not coming in and the track window looked frozen.

After I had downloaded my main image, then the error numbers from the AG

in the guide tab would begin appearing, just like before.

The downloaded image was terrible. So I did this a few more times and

this same conditions would occur.

Am I doing something wrong, or is that normal for Maxim to not show the

guider errors continously ?

Thanks

Sam

Sam,

When you switched to the "self guide" mode (autoguiding thru the

camera's guide chip), things change. You can image/guide (and watch

guide corrections) while the shutter is open, but when the main chip

image downloads, the shutter closes. Thus, while the shutter is

closed during the download of the main chip's data, no autoguiding

can occur...this is why you didn't see autoguiding data again until

after the download was complete and the next exposure occurred (when

the shutter "opened" again).

This is the main reason why many use a "delay" after download before

starting the next image...gives the guider time to "re-acquire" and

center the guide star before the next imaging exposure begins...and

time for the guide corrections to "settle".

Hope this helps.
