I'm a physics and computer science student working on an astronomy research

project. We used IRAF for data acqusition and intended on using it for data

reduction. The autoguider on the telescope we used was controlled by

MaximDL which was my first exposure to MaximDL. While IRAF is powerful, it

is difficult to use and even more difficult to install. I really like

MaximDL and would rather invest some time extending its functionality

instead of continuing to use IRAF.

We have MaximDL/CCD v.2, but I could convince the group to upgrade to v.3 if

I knew that I could extend its functionality. Can somebody point me in the

right direction for instructions, sample code, object models, function

primitives, and expected add-on package format?

I've found a wealth of knowledge pertaining to interfacing to a CCD. I'm

more concerned with reading and writing values to and from multiple .fits

files. I haven't delved into scripting yet, but I would rather write VB or

C++ applications with GUI interfaces.

MaxIm DL/CCD Version 3 includes full support for plug-in image processing

modules, written in VB or VC++. Sample code for a trivial plug-in is included

with the application, in both languages. The user manual also has some basic

tips on writing plug-ins. As a general rule, it's much easier to work in VB

than VC++/ATL.

The plug-in interface is built on ActiveX technology (ASCOM-compliant). This

means that you can use not only your own algorithms, but those built into MaxIm

DL as well.

I've been doing some development of utilities for MaxIm DL. I have some

resources you will find helpful. The help system for MaxIm DL contains

extensive documentation on the objects, properties, and methods available

for MaxIm DL. You may also find these helpful:

* A list of the properties/methods/objects that I compiled:

www.newastro.com/newastro/tutorials/maxim_objects.asp

* If you have my book (see link in my signature), I have made some VB

Scripts and source for VB programs for MaxIm DL available for readers on the

tutorial page:

www.newastro.com/newastro/tutorials/default.asp

* There are script examples on the MaxIm DL web site:

www.cyanogen.com/support/scripts/

You can also find some examples of scripts in the archives of this Yahoo

group; search on "script".

Hi,

I use MaximDL for teaching for exactly the same reasons, and I upgraded to

version 3. The current version still has a few shortcomings like insufficient

decimal places in the magnitude calculation, but I believ this will be cured

in the next upgrade.
