Re: Polar alignment or Periodic error?

Hi,

It was a mediocre night last night but I couldn't resist the

temptation to image M22. I posted a 1 minute shot of M22 in the

Debbie's astrophotos album. My question is this, are the trailed stars

due to polar alignment or Periodic error. The stars are trailed in

azimuth but not in declination. My scope is a TeleVue 102 on a GM-8

mount. Any thoughts?

Hi Debbie,

As far as I can tell from your uploaded image, the star trails are going

horizontally across the image. When this image is compared to a star chart, the

horizontal orientation is shown to correspond to the RA axis. Therefore, I would

estimate your problem is due to periodic error, though seeing may have

contributed something as well.
