There was a rumor going around that they were going broke. Looks like it may

have happened. That is unfortunate for the amateur astronomy community.

I read on another group page (Obsession group) that Pocono East and

West are closed--for good. I also tried calling both stores today

and the telephone lines were disconnected. The web site has been

closed for days now too. I really don't know what is going on. Hope

this helps.

Cheers,

Brian

I have no firsthand information, yet I'm pretty confident that this is

reliable: Pocono has gone out of business.

I don't know if this means that they will re-emerge under protection, or what.

I went in the store about 3 weeks ago and they said a major

contributing factor of their closing was losing Mead as a product.

They are no more.

Paul,

Yes, you are right. Pocono is closed (both stores).

As far as I know, some of the employees from the PA store will be opening a

new store in the upcoming months. It will be located in NJ across the

border from Milford PA. They are supposed to handle astronomical as well as

some other types of optics. I'm looking forward to seeing them in business.

Like the rest of you, I have no first-hand info. It's my

understanding, from what I've read in sci.astro.amateur and the

equipment forum in astromart, that Pocono is bankrupt and owes a lot

of money. What I've been reading is that Pocono's sales were strong,

but the owner may have misjudged some aspects of his finances -- is

that delicate enough? You may dismiss this as rumor, but it sounded

credible to me. Pocono seemed robust just a couple of months ago but

is now gone. Something very big happened.

I ordered and received merchandise from Pocono as recently as mid-

August, with no hint of pending catastrophe. When I last personally

talked to the owner on July 3, he was very upbeat. But in retrospect

I thought it was strange that he couldn't quickly send me a dewshield

for my new Meade SCT. I was willing to wait 94 days for a G-11, but

not for a dewshield. I was told they were backordered, and then a

month passed, and then I finally checked with OPT and found they had

three in stock, so I bought it from them over the counter. Perhaps

even then Pocono's supplier was balking over unpaid invoices. I'm

wondering if Pocono ever reimbursed Losmandy for my G-11, since I

keep reading that Pocono owes Scott a lot of money. I'm not sure how

that works, since I paid by credit card. Losmandy and Meade

apparently finally dropped Pocono as a dealer. At least one person

in s.a.a. was told by Pocono in late August that they were no longer

a Losmandy dealer. Losmandy remained on Pocono's webpage, but Meade

disappeared. Now the webpage is gone.

Postings from people who've visited the stores in NV and PA say both

stores are closed. There are no "sales." It sounds like the

merchandise was returned to the manufacturers and suppliers. Someone

in s.a.a. reported a conversation with an employee in PA saying they

might reopen under new ownership in NJ next year. I wouldn't hold my

breath.

Personally, I feel *very* lucky. I bought my G-11 and a lot of other

stuff from Pocono West, starting in March. I ordered and received an

eyepiece adaptor as recently as mid-August. Thankfully, I have no

outstanding orders.

Hi Andy,

I don't claim to "know" what their problem is, and it may seem a large leap

to some, but my experience with this sort of thing is 4 for 4... Meaning, I

heard the excuses. Product was delivered very late if at all, and later

found the company was teetering on the edge of bankruptcy, and eventually

declared so.
