I just bought my G-8 off Astromart and the RA doesnt seem to rotate

with the motor. When I took the cover off the motor, I can see that

the magnet is moving, but the rotation is not being transfered to the

mount RA. What can be the problem - the worm gear? Please help

Thanks in advance,

Hector

Don't worry, Hector :) Your RA is probably rotating just fine. You

can't see it rotating because it's extremely slow at normal speeds --

much slower than the motor shaft (remember, it makes just one

revolution in 24 hours!)

Put a telescope on it, focus on something far away, and leave for a

few minutes then come back and check: you'll see that the RA has

moved.

Hector, this is from the Losmandy website:

"I look at the pointer for the setting circles and I notice that the

drive isn't moving.

"The pointer move with the setting circles. You can not look at the

pointers to see if the drives are working. Look at a fixed point on

the mount."

Not sure if this is what you are noticing, but the RA setting circle

is meant to move with the RA axis, so you can't see a change on the

pointer. What this means is that slewing in RA will make the RA

setting circle no longer accurate. Moving the scope manually or

normal-speed tracking will preserve the RA setting circle reading.

Best,

Brad
