Have recently stripped my GM8, replaced worm bearings. On re-assembly
having regreased with "Alvania #2", find the RA shaft has a real play
of 5 thou", that is 0.0025" about a centre. This is NOT in the worm to
pinion mesh, but real "slop" between the RA shaft and the RA bearings.
Whilst this is not a major disaster (the RA shaft has a run out
error totalling 0.00025" as measured on Vee blocks at bearings positions,
so it is not a bent shaft - loads have never been over ratings anyway),
it is felt that this error is a bit much.
HELP ?? :
1. Does any one have a drawing of the innards of the Dec/RA shaft housings ?
2. How can RA/Dec bearings end caps be got off ? -what holds them on ?
Have the Queensland State Engineering Standards Laboratory advising
me and they feel that the bearing covers may be "Loktite" held and that heat
may get them off ? Further that the "Play" may be attributed to incorrect
adjustment of the RA bearings before putting on the end caps.
As the unit is in pristine condition we are loath to attack it without
proper prior knowledge - we have none, any heap genbuinely greatly
Hope Scott sees this one, Gerald.
