hi,

Would it be bad to put a 10 or 11 inch cassegrain on a GM8 mount?

If I were only interested in the setup as a planetary viewing

system? It doesnt have to be long exposure-stable, Just has to keep

a planet on a chip. Id like to keep the bulk of the system down

too. I feel like Id be violating some law of nature if I did this,

but I've seen some amazing planetary detail out of 11" sct's. Can

the mount physically handle this? I dont mind a shaky focus or

longer dampening times. I already have a GM8 mount, and the G11's

look huge. Ive used undermounted meade scopes before, and found it

workable for planetary photography. How shaky would this setup be?

Guaranteed to work if the optical tube weighs 30 lbs or less,

but FYI, with Gemini servos installed, I actually used GM-8

with C14 without any functional problems other than excessive

dampening problems, most of which are due to the tripod. I

don't recommend such a heavy load, but if the GM8 is capable

of go-to function with C14 on top, the C11 should not challenge

your mount other than previously noted dampening issues. If

you must do this, I would look for an HD tripod or pier for proper

support. This could then be upgradable later if so desired.
