Some time ago I mentioned that the ST4 can be used in the "Find and

Focus" mode to analyse PE. A number of comments soon followed and

rather than address each of them, I decided that the best way to

answer them is to write up my experiments. I have done this and

posted in the file section under the subject name. The proceedure

requires apart from the G-11 and ST4 familiarity with Microsoft's

XCEL spreadsheet. For me, the proceedure is usefull because I can

quantify the errors and then look for solutions. I hope you can find

this useful and I'll be glad to consider all queries.

Does anyone know if MaxDSLR or MaximDL can produce data that can

generate a PE graph? I would like to test my Losmandy GM8 mount to

determine it's native periodic error before using the PEC function for

comparison.

MaxImDL can - use the guider with guiding corrections switched off. It

can display a graph directly, or record teh data to a log. Be aware

though that the guide window is quite small (30 pix iirc) so any drift

has to be less than this.

Hi David,



Also consider trying PEMPro. It has a 60-day fully functional free trial. It

will work with cameras supported by Maxim, CCDSoft, AstroArt (you must own

one of these software packages), and also natively with video cameras that

support DirectDraw (like Philips Toucam Pro cameras) and all of the popular

Meade DSI series.



With PEMPro you don't need to change any autoguider settings (to get

accurate results you must not try to autoguide but turn autoguiding off and

measure a star's natural drift, which might fall off the subframe of most

autoguiders). PEMPro can use the entire CCD chip instead of a being limited

to an autoguider subframe.

Options.

Tracking Log.



Disable corrections in RA, and record this for a few cycles of the worm.

The error will have a slow 'trend' (unless you are perfectly polar

aligned), but will show the periodic error.

Ideally, you then sit down, and calculate the actual 'slope' of the

data, and remove this, leaving just the periodic component, then perform

averaging over several passes of the worm, to give really good data.

Simplest and best solution, download the demo version of PEMPro, and yu

have 30 days, to try this. This can automatically extract the slope, and

perform a FFT on the data, giving you the components corresponding to

the worm period, and upload these back to the mount, to give really good

periodic error correction.
