Some folks might be interested in some experiments I ran with my G11,
and did not know if perhaps others had done the same and what they
I have seen error in my mount less than 7 total arcseconds without
PEC enabled, and other times more.
I also noticed, but have not proven yet, that it seemed better loaded
with C11, than with current C8. Anyway, I experimented with balance
in RA. I usually have mount slightly weighted to east. What I found
and verified a couple times surprised me. I got the least amount of
error, verified with CCD drift images, when it was perfectly balanced
which is contrary to popular recommendation. I did not try weighting
towards the west.
Has anybody else ever noticed the same thing?
I will also point out that the G11 with 11 lb wt and c8 has a large
balance range, and even with clutch all the way loose, still has some
minor hold. With C11, and 22 lb weight, the slightest imbalance, the
mount would move one way or the other. So with the C8, when it
seems "balanced" it could actually still be weighted ever so slightly
to the east.
A freind also verified this with his, a heavier tube and an stv. He
got much better STV graphs with mount neutral.
