In order to guide the G11 with a PC do you have to have a G2 GOTO accessory attached? If I'm going to use my PC and a program like TheSkyX do I need the G2 at all? In this case, isn't the PC the GOTO unit? Would a regular G11 with the normal tracking hardware be enough?

Thanks

Guiding and GOTO are two different things.

Not sure of the hardware you mention but the PC when used to guide does

nothing more than look at short exsposure images and checks if the guide

star has moved (normally caused by errors in either the Polar alignment

or errors on the worm) if it has it sends a command to the mount to

correct these.

GOTO is where the mount has the capability to automatically slew to a

given object.

No, the Digital Drive unit is sufficient.

Again, no you do not require Gemini for guiding purposes. The PC

however does not add GOTO to your G11. The Gemini unit consists of

both the control board and a new set of motors that allow the mount to

be slewed through large angles of the sky in only a few seconds.

Whereas with the original motors, even at the fastest settings, the

mounts movement is imperceptible to your eyes.

For the purposes of simply guiding, the original drive unit is

adequate. However if you want to control the whole process from from

having the PC point the scope to the object being imaged and all

guiding, then Gemini is required.
