May I assume that ordering from 409shop is the best route? Seems most are happy with what they got. Is that correct.

I just picked up a UV-5R and really like it. Programming took a while, the OEM SW would not work on my shack laptop, com ports used up through 16, but worked on my home laptop, so, a success. Next will be the latest version of CHIRP since it was stated it will accept com ports higher than 16.

Com ports can be re-assigned in Windows. Use the Device Manager, select Ports.

It's highly unlikely that 16 ports are actually in use.

I did assume it & it appears to be the safest to me. Look at these photo's of the different packages that they arrive in--> HERE The bright flourescent orange package is the one that mine arrived in from the 409shop & i think (Im Not Sure) the other package is what the ones off ebay come in. At least i think that cause the guy posted them pics asking if them are the ones so im assuming it came off ebay.

John,

Yes, tried that, no luck. The shack laptop is tied to both a Navigator for PSK31 and Ham Radio Deluxe for my ICOM 7000, even as admin, disconnecting either did not let me reassign the ports. Yuppers, seems strange, but that was the experience.

Thanks for answering, appreciate it.

John is correct. There is a "How to fix out-of-range COM ports" guide in the files area.
