Re: [ap-ug] "Cool Stuff" List

I want to compile a list of neat accessories for AP and other scopes

as well as scope related items such as digital cameras, etc. The

purpose is to spread information about these less well known items to

the new members of this group, and I would of course share the info

with members of other astro egroups. Otherwise someone has to search

5000-40000 messages on each group to find these items.

Examples recently discussed would be:

Mueller Atomics Gizmos

Baader 3x-8x Flourite barlow and other new AP products

and even the electronic digital camera shutter...

Any ideas, please post them here or e-mail me privately and I'll

compile them. I'd rather the list be too broad rather than too

narrow, so fire away.

Thanks,

Derek

Neat

Speaking of which. I'm going to start a gizmos user's page on my "Atomics"

page. I'd like to have a picture from as many people as I can get, showing

their setup with whatever gizmo of mine they've got. Sort of a Rogue's

gallery of gizmos users. Joe Marietta is the first I have gotten consent from

and I hope all my users will send me their pics

Thanks Derek

Cool Stuff List

I have really enjoyed using the Baadar "Moon and Sky Glow" filter that I

recently got a few weeks ago. It is a 1-1/4" filter. You can buy them through

ITE for $25 each. I bought 2 for $50 plus $10 shipping for use with my AP

Baadar Binoviewer for my Stowaway. It seems to be an excellent well-made product

that does an excellent job. I was impressed with the optical quality, noticeably

improved contrast with polluted skys, and the overall good workmanship of this

product. There is a review of this filter at Cloudy Nights under Accessories. It

took me about 3 months to get mine so they are difficult to come by. I will

probably be using mine most or alot of the time now. Perhaps Astro-Physics might

consider including these in their product line. Just a suggestion.. The only

problem was that the instructions were in German so I'm not sure what they were

telling me! Good Luck,

Richard Lapides in California

Who makes those huge focuser wheels for the AP focuser? That might be

considered a 'cool' product.

Baader just sent me a sample. These are the only filters that are precision

polished to be optically flat so they can be used anywhere in the optical

train.

Wouldn't it be convienient("safe")if AP handled all the Baader

products wanted by USA consumers. They(Baader)have some really

interesting stuff on their website, including the Giro II and the

(Grey Market, apparently) Barlow among others. Not trying to cause

a "stir", don't know if it would be profitable, etc....just thinking

out loud.

By all means, count me in for the filter if you(RC) decide it's in

AP's interest to provide them as I am "more than confident" in your

business decisions.

We are looking at the possibility of adding a Baader section to our web site

and adding these items to the product line.

Not too long ago AP made a neat set of brackets to allow a 15" bar

to be attached to a Meade or Celestron 8" SCT OTA. Seems these

bracket attachments are not longer available. I'm sorry that nothing

except the Losmandy DC bar is available for my C9.25" OTA as I'm

still waiting for Scott Losmandy to ship mine (any day now actually).

I've a nice mount (AP600E Goto) and 9.25" OTA but no means of

attaching same. (Sigh!)

Parallax don't make any rings for the C9.25" as yet either.

The new "Cool Stuff" could bring back the C/M 8" attachment kit and

maybe add more. Possibly for the C9.25", M/C 10" and C11. The 10" and

11" may not be practical as the tubes maybe to long. Just a thought

anyway.

I do realize that there are lots of different OTAs out there

and "something for everyone" isn't always economically viable from a

production point of view. We can but dream though!

Yes, we did make brackets that fit on the 15" dovetail bar for a C8. Since

the Losmandy plates were so widely used and the cost of producing the few

brackets we made each year was so high, we decided to discontinue our

brackets. To be honest, the Losmandy bars fit the bill for all of the scopes

you mentioned and he can make them more economically in a higher volume.

I just wish you had my particular item (DC9.25) in stock. I really

want to try the C9.25. I think Scott has been "overwhelmed" with

orders. I hope I can look through this OTA before Jupiter is gone!

Herb, do you like throwing fire onto gasoline? :-)

I'm going to try to let everyone settle this themselves, but to address

a couple of issues:

--I don't mind dealers being on this list as long as they stick to the

general topic of the list

--I hope Tom Back doesn't get dragged into this
