Re: [ap-gto] 900 GTO RA Motor Question

Hello, I just received an AP 900 GTO. This is my second AP mount (currently

have an AP 400 GTO). Everything seems to work ok, however when I attached

my ST-10E, I noticed a big problem.

There are some serious vibrations in the RA gear. I was able to

troubleshoot this problem by taking a 6 second image with the gears running,

and then stopped. When the gears were running, the stars were vertical

hotdogs. When off, they were nice and round like they should be.

I then started to notice there was a difference in the sound the DEC and RA

gears sound when slewing. The DEC makes a very clean start and stop while

the RA seems to stop slewing kind of rough. I re-checked my balance and

everything was ok on that front. I loosened the RA damper knobs to make

sure that wasn't causing the problem. Same sound and same star problem.

So my questions follow:

1. Does this sound like the RA gear is too tightly meshed? The motor never

stalled.

2. Should the damper knobs be tight or loose?

Thanks,

Matt Russell

Matt,

Loosen the damper knobs and see if that helps.

Mark, I've already tried that. That was one of the original troubleshooting

things I did.

Matt,

A quick way to test if the gear mesh is to tight:

Take off the cover plate and expose the gears. With the power OFF,

manually turn the larger gear and see if you feel unusual

friction...or does it turn easily? Since Dec seems to be working

well, you could do the same with the dec gears and see if you feel a

difference.

In response to your second question, the damper knobs should be loose

(just barely touching the shaft)

If it's not a gear mesh issue, I'm sure Roland or Wally will quickly

help you diagnose and fix it.

Good Luck,
