I'm wondering if anyone has tried installing the 4" AP focuser on a TEC140? Any luck or problems with that?

Why? Is there a specific reason you would want to do this?

Hello, Dave

A while back I asked Yuri from TEC the same question regarding fitment of AP 4"

focuser to the 140 ED Apo. He said that the 4" focuser is too large so for now

the FeatherTouch 3.5" focuser (#3545) remains.as standard component of that

refractor.

Fernando

My TEC/FeatherTough focuser got buggered up and I need to send it in for repair. Figured I'd rather put the money toward a more robust focuser.

It got messed up when I attached the Astro-Physics JRFBRK RoboBracket to the TEC with the provided screws. On the FeatherTouch focuser pinion block, these holes are directly over the brass "rack" of the rack and pinion gears. I moved the focuser by hand for about 1.5 - 2 inches and really marred up the rack gear so badly that I can't use robofocus in that area.

Hello, Dave

The AP 140 f/7.5 refractor uses rings that are 6.5" OD, whereas the TEC 140 f/7

Apo uses rings that are 5.9" OD. So larger 4" AP focuser fits just fine on their

scope but Starlight Instruments FT #3545 (3.5") focuser fits the TEC OTA. So yes

both scopes are same aperture and similar focal length but external dimensions

are different, so not possible to attach 4" AP focuser to the TEC 140. Yuri of

TEC has confirmed this.

Regards,

Fernando

Thanks. That answers my question. It's odd to me that the 4" focuser fits the

AP140 though.

The rack alone should be a "dirt cheap" repair.

I copied Daniel Verschatse method of attachment for my robofocus to FT3545. Drill a single hole and use the existing focuser tension screw hole for a single point of attachment.

www.verschatse.cl/technicalnotes7.htm

and my version

www.pbase.com/mclemens1969/image/102998119/original

(you can barely see, but i used the stock tension adjustment screw and added washers to keep it from locking down the position)

Drill a single hole

I mean in the bracket! The focuser is stock, unmodified.

Dave,

Rolando uses the 6.5" dia. tube on the 155, 160, and 140 scopes.. That's why the

4" focuser will fit.

Thanks all. That gives me the level of detail that satisfies my question.
