Hi folks,

I have recently had a problem with my 1200GTO mount turning on. I

would like to run the problem by this group to see if there is

something I may be overlooking. The last time I tried to turn the

mount on, the keypad displayed the words "Astro Physics" and did not

go any further. After doing a search of this groups archives, I

checked the following:

Power Supply - power checked out OK.

Cold weather problem - Refused to come on in temps up to 60 deg.

Corroded Circuit board - My untrained eye can spot corrosion.

Loose connections on mount - carefully check and all seem OK.

One other clue: The main drive does work when power is supplied, but

the keypad doesn't repsond to any commands. Before I call AP for

advice on what seems to be a corroded circuit board, can anybody think

of anything I may have missed? Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Tom

Hi Tom

Just had similar problem. Keypad only displaying "Astro-Physics" any key

pressed would result in westerly direction RA only...........at full speed

with nothing to stop it.

I contacted Christine and Marj at AP, both were efficient and very helpful.

They asked me to send in the control box and Y cables. Turned out to be a

faulty chip, apparently very unusual as AP replaced the entire circuit

board. Got it back last week and works as good as new

Regards.........................Dennis

This is usually an indication that the communication between keypad and mount

servo is not working. This can occur if there is a faulty component (bad

UART) on the servo drive. It can also occur if the servo has gone into safe mode

when it detects something wrong with the RA motor. Check to see if the RA motor

is turning at the sidereal rate (remove the cover and look at the motor

shaft). You can also check to see if the servo will link to an outside program on

your laptop. If it does not, then we know it is in the servo and there is a

problem with the UART. In any case, the easiest way to determine where the

problem lies is to call here, and ask for Wally. He can run you through some checks

while you are on the phone, and suggest the next step toward resolution of the

problem.
