Thanks in advance for any advice...
The horror story: I inherited (more or less) a complete observatory, the main components consisting of an AP 1200 black quartz metric (hereafter referred to as the dinosaur) that carries an 8" D&G achromat.
Before my time, in between replacing the collapsed SkyTent with a real dome from Technical Innovations , the mount was exposed with only a tarp over it.
Worse, about 2 years ago this mount was dropped from about 4 feet onto a concrete floor. Miracles never cease; I put it back together and it still worked. Tracking and declination axes both respond to the hand controller.
Or at least used to. Friday night the RA axis suddenly gave out. I notice a nice quantity of grease has spilled/leaked out of the RA motor housing. When either E or W button is pushed, a clicking sound can be heard, but no engagements seems to happen.
Also it should be mentioned that we once (2 years ago) had the RA motor disconnected from the axis. Perhaps the worm/gear alignment was bad and it took until now to grind the gears into a non-working state? Maybe it needs to be lubricated?
Anyone with any advice would be greatly welcomed...
