Re: [planeplotter] Re: Changing aircraft icons

I have, in the past, come across various screenshots of other PP users. Chart/radar screens that show different icons for different aircraft types e.g. the various airliners, helicopters, GA. I managed to find a guide some time ago in the help section (or in the PP Wiki) on how to change these aircraft icons, but when reading through it, it looked like I would have to edit the SQB file and add each type icon to each aircraft? There are thousands and thousands of aircraft so I hope I.ve got this wrong! I.ve never edited the SQB file before, I just use the ManTMA file that gets regularly updated as I don.t have a receiver (I.m a MU but not a GS), which is fantastic and really appreciated. In editing this SQB file to add the new icons, when I download a new SQB with the updated hexs and registrations, will that then wipe the aircraft icons I'll have added?

I also don.t know how to create each aircraft icon. I.ve read there.s a program that you can create your own, but presumably there are standard icons that lots of users use so hopefully I can use those as well?

I.m currently using PP v6.2.6.7 so I.m a little behind on updates (and emails having recently returned from a family break) and I.ve been monitoring the situation regarding the flags so I.ll wait to sort these aircraft icons before embarking on flags. If anyone can help me through the process of setting up these icons I.d be very grateful as I don.t understand what needs to be done.

Apparently the noses of the aircraft are supposed to change colour depending on whether the aircraft is ascending or descending but the whole aircraft icon including the nose is yellow (or white for MLATs, orange for signal lost etc) and doesn.t change when changing altitude.

Many thanks

ONE way - I'm sure others will show differently - Is to download this

SQL Database manager www.sqliteexpert.com/download.html (the free

one is the 2nd button down) and use it to edit your Basestation.sqb file

You then open the basestation.sqb file with it.

You do the editing by creating a script full of lines like:-

UPDATE Aircraft SET USERTAG = "$7" Where ICAOTypeCode is "S76";

UPDATE Aircraft SET USERTAG = "$7" Where ICAOTypeCode is "S92";

UPDATE Aircraft SET USERTAG = "$7" Where ICAOTypeCode like "UH1%";

UPDATE Aircraft SET USERTAG = "$7" Where ICAOTypeCode is "Wcat";

UPDATE Aircraft SET USERTAG = "$7" Where ICAOTypeCode is "Lynx";

UPDATE Aircraft SET USERTAG = "$8" Where ICAOTypecode like "A124";

UPDATE Aircraft SET USERTAG = "$8" Where ICAOTypecode like "IL76";

UPDATE Aircraft SET USERTAG = "$A" Where ICAOTypeCode is "DH8D";

UPDATE Aircraft SET USERTAG = "$A" Where ICAOTypeCode like "AT%";

(This is a section from mine that is over 100 lines long)

you then press the Execute SQL button and it runs through each record

setting the usertag

It takes a little bit of getting used to and you are advised to FIRST

make a copy of your SQB file!!

I know someone recently posted a file full of the above to set up

planesymbols to the Group Files section

Happy to continue this off forum if you are interested

There's already a script available to add the usertag. Look for

Thanks very much Mark. Got the zip file and added the symbols in thanks to

help from eLaReF and I've been using SQLite and SymbolMaker2 to tweak it but

the symbols in that zip are all triangles. So I also got hold of the older

symbols planesymbol_files starter pack, which is what I've been using to

tweak the shapes. Does anyone use all aircraft-related symbols? I've seen

screenshots so at least one person does! But I can't remember who posted

those. As I said, I've been having a play with SymbolMaker but the aircraft

look....odd! If anyone does use all aircraft-related symbols would they be

willing to share them please? I think my helicopters and light aircraft

look ok but it's the wrong time of day to be testing those out on the radar

screen!

Many thanks

Chris - I'll send you all mine - just remember to change the

number/letter to match yours if you decide to use one

There is also a rider somewhere from Bev (Help File or Wiki?) about NOT

changing the symbols 1-5 (I think)

Oh wonderful, 1-5 are the ones I've been working on, argh! I remember

reading about not using any more than 1-9 and A-F and any not assigned a tag

goes to the default. I didn't know there were some we shouldn't touch.

Chris - I'll send you all mine - just remember to change the

number/letter to match yours if you decide to use one

There is also a rider somewhere from Bev (Help File or Wiki?) about NOT

So instead, they added the text onto the end of my message
