Thanks to all those people who took the trouble to reply to my message. With your suggestions I have now succesfully sorted out the problem. It would appear that ISPF has a numbering feature that, unlike the DOS/UNIX editors I am used to, will actually write the line numbers to the file. Once I turned it off the JCL worked as expected.
